Biggest Dog Breed? What Are the Biggest Dog Breeds In the World - Pet Insurance 101

biggest dog breedIt is innate to humans to get fascinated with the largest, biggest, smallest, tallest, and shortest; people delight  a lot in such activities. Come now and let’s discover together the biggest dog breed in the world.  Are you ready?

There are two elements that we take into account when we think about the biggest dog breed and these are its height and weight. Irish Wolfhounds and Great Danes are tall dogs. Irish Wolfhounds are commonly recognized as the biggest dog breed in the world eventhough the appropriate term in their case would be “tallest dog breed” among all A.K.C accepted dogs. These wolfhounds can reach up to 35 inches in their lifetime. Great Danes offers the Irish Wolfhounds a tough challenge at the “biggest dog breed” title. Great Danes typically average up to around 32 inches at the withers however some specimen may well be higher and heavier than almost any Irish wolfhound. Standing on their hind legs, these breeds would be more than seven feet tall, that is a lot of muscle with powerful jaws to boot!

The rationale behind A.K.C’s findings was pointed out in the previous paragraph is that there is a particualr dog breed which is essentially taller and bigger than either the Irish wolfhound and the Great Dane. This is the Bully Kutta, it is a Mastiff and a big one at that. It can reach 42 inches at the withers. The dog can be found in South Asia particulary in India and Pakistan. It goes back quite further in history, where Persians and Greeks utilized Bully Kutta as protecting soldier encampments. In India it was employed to assist in big hunting games. A little more facts about this unpopular but commendable animal is that it gracefully walks like a tiger, it is recognized for being a ferocious fighter but similar to every dogs they love their master and makes a great pet dog.

When it come to weight, the Irish wolfhound points the scales at 120 pounds, the Great Dane weighs in at around 160 pounds on the average; the lesser-known Bully Kutta weighs about 210 pounds. Kutta, by the way, is the Hindi term for “Dog”.

If we look into the second qualification, i. e. weight, for choosing the biggest dog breed on the planet then the names to think about would be the Saint Bernard, Neapolitan Mastiff, and the Great Dane. Mastiffs, in their distinct type as the Bullmastiff, English Mastiff, etc are well-represented in different list of heavy canines. Hark back to just what you’ve read earlier, the Bully Kutta is also a mastiff.

The English Mastiff can weigh up to 200 pounds as well as measure 30 inches at the withers, the Neapolitan Mastiff is often as hefty as 170 pound and can grow as high as 31 inches tall, we previously learn regarding the Great Dane, the Saint Bernard also can load up to 200 pounds in its 28-inch body frame.

The mentioned biggest dog breed may be split up by a few inches and a couple of pounds; but we can be certain that these wonderful pets does pay little attention to these kinds of tidbits of which captivates us. They are all amazing as well as they enrich the lives of many people.

AKC Pet Health Insurance

You either love them or you hate them, the members, breeders, and owners who are affiliated with the American Kennel Club.  Puppies who are registered with the American Kennel Club are the aristocracy of the dog world, granted entry into the finest clubs and most exclusive clubs. The breeds not recognized by the American Kennel Club or dogs that are of a mixed ancestry often feel like outsiders or commoners.

For all the hoopla surrounding the American Kennel Club only members actually seem to know what it really is. The American Kennel Club is the largest registry of purebred dogs in the entire world. In 2006 there were over nine hundred thousand dogs registered with the American Kennel Club. In addition to registering dogs the American Kennel Club also host several large shows including the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show (it is actually older then the kennel club) and the AKC/Eukanuba National Championships.

The American Kennel Club has been registering puppies for over one hundred and twenty-two years. In 2006 the AKC signed a contract with the pet stores Petland but later rescinded the offer after a flurry of controversy. In addition to hosting dog show and overseeing the registration of hundreds of thousands of dogs each year the American Kennel Club also takes an active interest in canine health research. Some dog owners are familiar with their current advertising campaign promoting their commitment to healthy dogs.

Because the American Kennel Club realizes that the high cost of veterinary care can be difficult for many dog owners to afford they now offer AKC pet health insurance. The American Kennel Club Healthcare Plan is designed to help offset the high cost of Veterinary treatments, surgery, and prescriptions.

On the American Kennel Club website they have a list of claims that have recently been paid to dog owners who have purchased an AKC pet health care plan. These claims included a $ 2,600.00 doller claim for poison toadstools, for a recent case of bee stings they paid a claim of $ 2,200, and the owners of a dog that was bitten by a snake received a check for 1,262, $ 2,000 for an intestinal resection, and $ 2,800 paid out for a ruptured ligament.  The biggest claim currently listed on the website is for a ruptured vertebral disc that would have cost the owners an additional $ 3,329 out of their pockets

The American Kennel Club estimates that the average daily cost of a healthcare plan for your dog is approximately sixty-eight cents a day (this is based on the Essential plan’s annual price). You can pick from four different types of healthcare insurance plans, you have a variety of wellness options you can choose from that will help cover dental cleaning, shots, and checkup. Applying for the insurance is supposed to be easy and you can choose to pay monthly or yearly. You get to continue to use you very own veterinarian. The American Kennel Club also offers coverage for cats.  One of the really nice features about the AKC pet healthcare coverage is the sixty-day complimentary trail period.

Getting Health Insurance For My Pet Was A Bad Deal. Here"s Why

(AMP_ion_Photography)

(AMP_ion_Photography – Not Tonka)

Insurance is always a gamble. Pet health insurance, much like human health insurance, is a bet that your pet’s covered medical expenses over its lifetime will add up to more than the premiums you pay. Following that logic, Howard got a health insurance plan through VPI for his late pet Chihuahua, Tonka. He paid his bills faithfully and filed only a few small claims over the years, until his pet suffered from heart problems in his last six months. Then Tonka began to suffer from heart problems. This is the very situation that pet owners buy insurance for. How did things work out financially?

Before our pet-loving readers begin to worry: Tonka didn’t make it. He was put to sleep after suffering one too many instances of heart failure. Not for lack of medical care, though: he saw a veterinary cardiologist and was hospitalized at a 24-hour emergency clinic when he suffered sudden heart failure. We’re very sorry to hear that Tonka died, but that wasn’t the reason why Howard wrote to us. He was following up on a post from a few years ago, “Does Your Pet Need Health Insurance?” based on calculations by our number-crunching siblings over at Consumer Reports Money Advisor.

In that article, they argued that for most pet owners, you’re better off taking the money that you would have spent on insurance premiums and putting it in a savings account. After Tonka died, Howard put this theory to a real-world test, and came to the same conclusion.

He explains:

I signed up for VPI Superior Plan (Best available) in 2006 for my Chihuahua Tonka. Prior to late 2012 I had submitted 3 small claims), once in 2006 which I submitted a $ 260 bill and VPI paid $ 151. Once in 2009 which VPI paid $ 0 and once in $ 2011 they paid $ 26.

In late 2012 my Chihuahua was diagnosed with cardiac issues. We had an emergency trip to the Vet which cost us $ 862, I was happy when I saw VPI reimbursed us $ 732, but it quickly went down hill from there. I was told we need to take Tonka to see a cardiologist. The visit to the Cardiologist cost $ 630 and VPI paid back $ 310, the biggest issue being VPI only covers $ 150 of a Echocardiogram which runs about $ 500 and is the best way to determine what is going on.

It was determined his heart was failing and we were given a bunch of meds and asked to come back in 6 month for a follow up. The followup visit in March cost us $ 565 (another Echocardiogram and consultation). VPI paid just $ 247.

Then just 2 weeks later Tonka started having breathing issues at 3am. We rushed to the emergency room where they said he was going back into heart failure.

We left him there for 24hrs, while they kept him on oxygen and monitored him and gave him his meds through injections. The total bill for this was $ 1718 (see attached photo), VPI paid $ 256. 6 days later Tonka went back into Heart failure and we had to put him to sleep. (still waiting to see how much they reimburse me for).

When I questioned the reimbursement amount, especially for the last bill I was told that we had used our benefit allowance. And they don’t adjust based on where you live, obviously in some states 24 hour emergency care must be a lot cheaper then Northern VA. Also I guess next time my dog has a relapse or needs followup checkups I better tell him to wait until the year is up so I can actually take advantage of the insurance I’m paying for.

As a quick breakdown:

In 7 years of having their “Top of the Line Plan” and paid around $ 2200.

In that time period I submitted $ 4286 in claims (mostly in the last 6 months).

They paid out a total of $ 1801 in those 7 years..

So in total we paid $ 2200 + $ 4286 – $ 1801 = $ 4685

Had we not had insurance and just put money away, we would have paid $ 4286 out of pocket.

So having insurance cost us $ 399 more then not having it.

Needless to say I’d like to warn anyone who is considering Pet Insurance and especially if they are to avoid VPI.

That’s Howard’s experience: if you’ve crunched the numbers on your own pet’s health crises, please let us know!

Health Insurance For Dogs - and Cats

Dog Health Insurance

Why buy dog health insurance? If you’ve owned a dog for any length of time, you understand the costs involved. In addition to the food, the toys, the bedding, and the grooming, there’s the cost of veterinary care. This can run into some big bucks. Just the price of monthly heartworm prevention, monthy flea and tick prevention, and annual vaccinations really add up quickly. But these are just the tip of the proverbial iceberg when it comes to the real cost of veterinary care, and health insurance for dogs can be a life saver. Unexpected emergencies can pop up at any time. We’ve had some huge vet bills over the years. The largest involved treating one of our quail hunting dogs, an English pointer, for cancer. Another was when we purchased an adult already-trained hunting dog and discovered that he was infested with heartworms. That treatment involved blood transfusions and numerous stays and visits to the veterinary clinic, racking up a hefty bill. Depending on your specific policy, dog health insurance might cover most or all of such bills.

Pet Insurance

Feline owners can benefit from pet insurance, too. Cats have the reputation for letting their curiosity get them into trouble, seemingly doing their level best to use up all nine lives in a hurry. Weve had cats to get hit by cars and to get tangled up with fishing line with the hooks still attached. In two cases, the hooks became embedded in the cats mouths. And, you know, people always say a feline will land on its feet from a fall, but even if thats true, it doesnt mean the animal wont be injured. Hubby had a big Siamese that broke its leg after jumping off a BBQ grill. When it comes to vet care, its about as expensive to treat cats as it is dogs.

Unfortunately, most dogs are just as bad as cats when it comes to putting themselves in dangerous situations. Dogs are inquisitive by nature, and this often leads to problems. They get out and run in front of vehicles. They get into fights with other canines. They accidentally ingest poisons or other toxic substances like antifreeze. They explore potentially dangerous critters like porcupines, badgers, coyotes, and snakes. My granddaughters bulldog was attacked by coyotes, and weve had two dogs to be bitten by rattlesnakes. I’ve had dogs to break their legs while playing, too. What if you dont have the money on hand to treat emergencies? I dont know about you, but we love our dogs almost as if they were our children. If something happened to one of them, Id probably do just about anything in order to save its life.

In addition to injuries, dogs are plagued by a host of illnesses and medical conditions. Some of these include hip dysplacia, eye problems, respiratory infections, arthritis, mange, seizures, diabetes, heartworms, influenza, stomach bloat, and several types of cancers and tumors. Sometimes quick treatment can be the difference in life and death, and preventive care can be even more important.

Any of these problems can quickly run into thousands of dollars. Many people can’t afford the price of x-rays, CT scans, blood transfusions, or surgeries for themselves – much less for their pets. In far too many cases, the beloved family dog has to be humanely euthanized because its family cannot afford life-saving treatments and procedures. But it doesn’t have to be this way if you have dog health insurance. The best dog insurance will cover both emergencies and preventive care.

Vet Care

Let’s talk for just a moment about vet care. More specificially, let’s focus on the cost of vet care. If you already own a dog, you’re probably already aware of the costs associated with most dog maintenance, but new or future dog owners might not be as aware. Also, even if you’ve owned a dog for years, you might not have had to pay for injuries or illnesses associated with your pet. Below are just a few examples of vet costs in my area. Vet costs where you live might be higher or lower. Also, the size of the dog, the extent of the injury or illness, and other factors could influence the vet costs significantly.

Dog Spaying: starts at $ 76 for small dogs; $ 94 for dogs over 60 pounds

Dog Neutering: $ 60 for small dogs; $ 75 for dogs over 60 pounds

Heartworm Treatment: $ 490 for small dogs; $ 680 for dogs over 88 pounds

X-Rays: $ 48 each

Dental Cleaning: $ 85

Swallowed Objects in stomach: $ 840

Setting a Broken Bone: $ 325

Anesthesia: $ 45

Parvo Treatment: $ 500 – $ 1500, depending on severity

Sedation: $ 45

Best Dog Insurance

What’s the best dog insurance? Several reputable companies offer dog health insurance. Every policy is a little different, but the best dog insurance covers spaying and neutering, vaccines and boosters, routine dental care, surgeries, hospital stays, infections, heart disease, arthritis, kidney disease, cancer, poisoning, injuries, and prescription drugs. Your veterinarian might be willing to give you some pointers here mine did. He was open about telling me which companies he and his clients had had the best experiences with.

There’s a wide range of options and deductibles for health insurance for dogs. Be sure to read the fine print so that you’ll know exactly what is and isn’t covered. Some pet insurance costs as little as about $ 13 per month. You can search online for companies that insure dogs, and on many sites, you can get a free quote. Just answer a few quick questions about your pooch, along with the type of coverage you want, and in just a second or two you’ll discover how much your monthly premium will be. It’s that simple! Remember that the best dog insurance is the one that addresses the individual needs of you and your pet.

I urge all pet owners to purchase dog insurance or pet health insurance for their furry family members. Give some thought to how you’d pay the vet bills if the unthinkable happened to Fido or Fluffy. Don’t be faced with the possibility of euthanizing man’s best friend needlessly. The best pet insurance can provide you with wonderful peace of mind.

Dog Liability Insurance

There’s another type of dog insurance – dog liability insurance. This is insurance that covers bites and other types of injuries caused by your dog. Your homeowner’s policy might cover such claims, but it might not. I spoke with my insurance agent about the topic of dog liability insurance, and he explained some things to me. For example, in many cases, injuries from dogs are often covered in a typical homeowner’s policy, but in most cases, it has to be your dog, and the incident has to take place on your property for it to be covered. He also explained that on most applications for homeowner’s insurance, there’s a question about the number and type of dogs on the property. There might also be a question regarding the canine’s history – if it’s ever bitten or attacked a human or another animal. If you answer “yes,” you could be denied a policy, or you could be granted a policy that doesn’t cover injuries caused by your dog. The type of dog or dogs you own might come into question, too. Some insurance companies consider some dog breeds vicious or more prone to biting. If you own one of these dog breeds, you might be denied a typical policy. In that case, you’ll need to buy a special policy for dog liability insurance.

This point hit home with me just a couple of weeks ago. We changed insurance companies for our homeowner’s policy. When I completed the phone interview with the agent, she wanted to know all about our dogs and their history. She also wanted to make sure that we didn’t have Rotweillers, pit bulls, or other so-called high risk dog breeds on our property. If we owned any dangerous dog breeds, they might not have been able to insure us at all. I’m not saying this is fair, but it’s the cold, hard truth.

Don’t think that just because your pooch is gentle with family members that you’re in the clear. Dogs are unpredictable. My cousin, who runs a daycare, had a sweet, gentle, lovable golden retriever that adored all the daycare kids. The dog had never shown any aggression at all. In fact, goldies are usually considered to be the second safest of all breeds. One day, however, a toddler handled the goldie roughly, and the dog bit the boy in the face. If you have small children as frequent visitors in your home, you might want to consider dog liability insurance, no matter the dog breeds involved. No matter how you look at it, dog insurance of any type is never a bad idea!

Five Reasons to Consider Pet Insurance

1 Flares 1 Flares ×

You left for an outing with friends thinking your furry friend would be napping and waiting for your arrival.

Um, not so much. The moment you left they went on a reconnaissance mission for snacks and other mischievous activities. Did we mention they got into your secret “when I think of him” chocolate stash?  Between Sparky’s torn ear, Buster’s bloody lip, and the fact that chocolate is poisonous to dogs, you’re looking at a long, expensive night at the emergency veterinary hospital.

You’re not alone. The average pet owner has between $ 500 to $ 1,000 in emergency funds available for an unexpected trip to the vet. Sadly, most emergency situations cost more than this – hello credit cards! Then there are the long-term illnesses like cancer or diabetes which can really add up in a short time. But we pay, because we love our furry kids as much as we do the human ones.

“I always hear from Pet Parents, ‘I wish I had purchased pet insurance, because my pet was ill just last month’,” said pet expert and blogger Steven May from the Daily Growl.

Pet Insurance Benefits

  • Offers financial peace of mind in the event that your pet needs emergency veterinary care

  • Covers serious illnesses such as cancer, diabetes and renal disease

  • Covers surgical care if your pet is seriously injured

  • Can cover veterinary services like tooth extractions and advanced dental procedures, depending on the policy

  • Gives you freedom to pursue a board certified specialist for your pet’s specific needs

A Few Things You Should Know
Just like human insurance, pricing and coverage are dependant on breed, age, gender and past illnesses. Monthly premiums can be very low but you are responsible for paying for your vet bill at the time of service. Then you file a claim to get reimbursed 80% and 90% by your insurance provider, once you’ve met your coinsurance payment. This varies depending on provider and policy. And just like insurance for humans, certain pre-existing conditions can be a deal breaker when it comes to price or even getting coverage at all.  Some solid pet insurance companies include  Trupanion, Petcare and Veterinary Pet Insurance.
